So what are core beliefs? Core beliefs, are deep routed beliefs about ourselves, the world and others. They live in the depths of our subconscious mind and are responsible for all internal dialogue that we tell ourselves about how we think and feel. They are formed from impactful experiences from our past, our upbringing and people around us. They represent how we feel about ourselves and the assumptions we make. So if we focus on the negative side of things for the purpose of this blog, those beliefs may look like, 'I'm not good enough', 'I'm unloveable', we may believe that people are all untrustworthy or manipulative, that the world is a dangerous place.

The good news is that it is possible to change your core beliefs if you really come to understand and pick them apart. You can ask yourself questions such as; where did this belief come from?, Why am I getting triggered by a certain event that is causing me to feel upset? You have to peel back the layers of emotions to get to the core. The key is self-awareness and noticing your thoughts.

If our core beliefs are negative they become limiting and can be the root causes of low self-esteem. They shape how we treat ourselves, others, and even how others may treat us. We live accordingly to these beliefs and our subconscious mind is programmed to act in ways that support these beliefs.

As a counsellor I often work with clients whose core beliefs are damaging their mental health. Once we work on linking thoughts with experiences and giving context to them it gives us a good foundation to work from.

Once you have a better understanding of your core beliefs and you have brought these into your conscious awareness, you can work to alter and challenge them. The process to uncover these isn't easy, it takes time and a willingness to learn about yourself, but it's absolutely possible.

Take care

Michelle
